A Bento (弁当) is the Japanese version of a single portion take out or home prepared meal, typically served at lunchtime and normally consisting of either rice or noodles, fish or meat and vegetables cooked & pickled, served in a multi-compartmented box which is designed to seperate each item and portion control.

Bento holds great cultural significance in Japan. It embodies the principles of convenience, balance, and aesthetics all of which are deeply ingrained in Japanese culture.

In Japan, it is a widely adopted daily ritual and social expectation for mothers in particular to prepare the ingredients for their child’s Bento the night before and assemble it in the morning so that they have a nutritious and aesthetically pleasing meal to take to school with them.
